West Junior Hockey held inaugural State school finals this week at Taunton School .

We are grateful to Laura Bennett and Taunton School for providing their facilities free of charge and hosting the event .

The girls had 8 teams competing in some good matches and in some bring sun in what turned out to be a hot day.

Kings of Wessex won the keenly contested final 1-1 draw and then on sudden death shoot out against Newquay Tretherras School. Third were Penryn College and fourth Colyton Grammar School.

The boys had 9 teams in a competition that saw games increase in standard as the day progressed.

Penryn College won 2-1 in a well contested final with superior tactics against a skilful young squad from Devonport High School fielding 6 year 8 players. Third were Ridgeway school and fourth Colyton Grammar School.

Thanks to those who umpired, David Yelland and Richard Mays from West umpires, school teachers , Laura Bennett and particularly the young umpires at the boys event where we had three under 18 umpires who did very well.

Also thanks to Paul Westgate for his excellent templates and Val Shipsey for organising the event.
